Tiny Flower Stud Earrings

Learn how to make the most of your scrap silver!

About the Class

The Tiny Flower Stud Earrings class is a quick and satisfying beginner project that introduces a wonderful range of essential jewellery making techniques in one small design.

As you create the earrings, you’ll practise cutting silver discs, adding hammered texture, shaping the flowers using a doming block, and soldering small joins as you attach the stud posts to the back of the earrings. It’s a lovely project for building confidence with smaller-scale soldering while creating a finished piece that is simple, elegant, and very wearable.

You’ll also learn how easy — and surprisingly fun — it is to melt tiny scraps of silver into perfect little balls to decorate the centre of the flowers. I really want beginners to start seeing just how useful even the smallest offcuts of silver sheet or leftover wire can be.  If you’d like to explore this idea further, here's a link to a free video all about reforming and reusing scrap silver wire, helping you make the most of the silver you already have on your bench.

Tiny Flower Stud Earrings class is part of the Jeweller's Bench Membership - click here for more details.

If  you need any extra help as you work your way through the classes do join us over on The Jeweller's Bench Café group over on Facebook - the perfect place to ask for advice and to show off what you've been making.

You will need:

Materials:
Small pieces of silver sheet between approximately 0.5mm and 0.7mm thick large enough to cut two discs (mine are 9.5mm), plus a pair of stud fittings.

Equipment: (all the jewellery making kit listed here can be used for many different projects)
* Soldering kit - see here for more details
* Disc cutter
* Heavy hammer suitable for hitting other tools
* Texturing hammer
* Steel block
* Leather hammer (or folded tea towel)
* Magic Scotch tape or similar
* Doming block
* Wooden punches

An explanation of all the tools and materials that you need is included in the videos, and a downloadable equipment and materials list is available with the class.

My Tiny Flower stud earrings are started as two 9.5mm discs. Feel free to adapt the project to make earrings of whatever size you wish according to your tastes and the materials you have available. This design would look just as lovely as a pair of drop earrings or even a matching pendant. Remember that the bigger the disc you want to use, the thicker the silver needed to make sure that your design has enough strength.

Joanne Tinley

Tutor and Founder of The Jeweller's Bench

The Jeweller's Bench is run by Joanne Tinley. She has been making her own jewellery for as long as she can remember and left her first career as a school teacher to set up business as a  jewellery designer and tutor nearly 20 years ago. She is
self-taught and like many people started with wire and beads. Learning how to solder, however, opened up a whole new world of jewellery making,  one that she is keen to share!
