The Art of Keum Boo - Cup of Gold Pendant

Learn how to add beautiful 24k gold to your silver jewellery - use your leftover gold foil!

About the Class

This class continues my series on Keum Boo, the ancient Korean technique that translates as “attached gold”, and introduces a wonderful way to use up the smaller leftover pieces of 24k gold foil from previous projects.

Using heat and pressure rather than solder, Keum Boo creates a strong permanent bond between gold and silver, allowing even tiny amounts of gold to add beautiful warmth and contrast to your jewellery. It’s one of those techniques that feels almost magical when you see the gold bond successfully to the silver for the first time.

Although the class project is a pendant, the design is very adaptable and could easily be turned into earrings, cufflinks, or other small jewellery pieces. Because the project works beautifully at different sizes, it’s also a great way to make use of both silver and gold leftovers from other work.

This class is a lovely opportunity to build confidence with Keum Boo while experimenting more creatively with shape, layout, and texture, all while creating a finished piece that looks elegant and far more expensive than the materials used.

An understanding of the information in the first class in this series, the Golden Butterfly Pendant class, is useful. All of the Keum Boo classes can be found in The Art of Keum Boo course bundle.

You will need:

Materials:
* 0.6mm - 0.8mm thick sterling silver sheet, enough to cut a 16mm diameter disc
* small pieces of 24k gold Keum Boo foil left over from other projects
* small piece of 0.8mm wire for a bail
* a chain to complete the pendant

Equipment: (all the jewellery making kit listed here can be used for many different projects)
* Soldering kit - see here for more details
* Ultralite kiln or hot plate
* Steel or agate burnisher
* Wooden coffee stirrer (or similar) and small pot of water
* Steel block and leather cushion (or folded tea towel!)
* Sharpie
* Disc Cutter
* Doming block and punches
* Old hammer suitable for hitting other tools
* Wire cutters and round nosed pliers
* Emery paper or sanding pad
* Medium radial disc and medium silicon rubber wheel in pendant drill (optional)
* 6" flat file and needle files

An explanation of all the tools and materials that you need is included in the videos, and a downloadable equipment and materials list is available with the class.

As with all the Keum Boo classes this project can be adapted to suit your materials and your style. It works just as beautifully as smaller pendant, a pair of drop or stud earrings or even as a pair of cufflinks.

Tutor and Founder of The Jeweller's Bench

The Jeweller's Bench is run by Joanne Tinley. She has been making her own jewellery for as long as she can remember and left her first career as a school teacher to set up business as a  jewellery designer and tutor nearly 20 years ago. She is
self-taught and like many people started with wire and beads. Learning how to solder, however, opened up a whole new world of jewellery making,  one that she is keen to share!
