Cleaning Jewellery Files

You use your files daily and they should last you a lifetime - but only if you look after them! Learn how to clean them properly in this free tutorial

About the Tutorial

All the files that I use in my jewellery studio are Vallorbe files, a great Swiss make. Although they can be pricy, if I look after them carefully they will last me a lifetime. I know that to be true as some of the Vallorbe files that I inherited are now over 50 years old and still work beautifully.

However, files will not work beautifully if they become clogged with metal dust. This quick video tutorial will show you how easy it is to clean them up and get filing efficiently again.

This video class is just one in a collection of free tutorials. You can enrol on each one individually or enrol on the whole bundle so that you don't miss out on new classes!

Tools and Materials

To clean my files I use a small steel wire brush and a piece of scrap copper or brass. You will also need safety googles to protect your eyes from small stray pieces of metal!

Joanne Tinley

Tutor and Founder of The Jeweller's Bench

The Jeweller's Bench is run by Joanne Tinley. She has been making her own jewellery for as long as she can remember and left her first career as a school teacher to set up business as a  jewellery designer and tutor nearly 20 years ago. She is
self-taught and like many people started with wire and beads. Learning how to solder, however, opened up a whole new world of jewellery making,  one that she is keen to share!
