Bird on a Branch Pendant

Sawing a simple silver pendant

About the Class

Get confident with sawing, soldering, texturing and shaping your silver!

The Bird on a Branch class teaches you how to saw, or pierce, inside your silver sheet to create a simple but gorgeous design. As a bonus, a second design is shown and templates are provided for both.

Sawing is an essential jewellery making skill, and I've packed in as many tips as I can into this class, the same ones that I give to my in-studio classes. The most important piece of advice I can give you however is to practice!

The Bird on a Branch pendant class is also available as part of the Silversmithing for Beginners bundle, a series of classes designed to get you confident with all the basic skills needed for all jewellery making.

You will need:

* Silver sheet approximately 0.8mm (20 gauge) thick, large enough for your chosen pendant size. The pendants in the class are approximately 25mm by 13mm but feel free to resize the templates.
*2 small jump rings
* Chain to finish pendant.

Equipment: (all the jewellery making kit listed here can be used for many different projects)
* Templates (downloadable from class materials)
* Drill, 0.9mm drill bit plus wooden block to drill into (class shows a bow line drill)
* Sharpie
* Jeweller's saw and bench peg
* Wire cutters and flat nose pliers
* Emery paper
* 6" flat file and needle files
* Sticker maker to turn tempalte in to sticker (optional)
* A paint brush is also useful for brushing away silver dust

An explanation of all the tools and materials that you need is included in the videos, and a downloadable equipment and materials list is available with the class.

Once you've made the Bird and Tulip pendants shown in the class have a go at creating your own designs!

Tutor and Founder of The Jeweller's Bench

The Jeweller's Bench is run by Joanne Tinley. She has been making her own jewellery for as long as she can remember and left her first career as a school teacher to set up business as a  jewellery designer and tutor nearly 20 years ago. She is
self-taught and like many people started with wire and beads. Learning how to solder, however, opened up a whole new world of jewellery making,  one that she is keen to share!
